Amazon Prime Video has launched its first Christmas commercial. The story has a little bit of Scrooge, a little bit of befriending the unloved, a little bit of Christmas magic…and a lot of appeal because it stands out in the crowd with its quirky sense of humour.
It’s the story of a grumpy zookeeper who befriends a snarling hyena because of their mutual love of TV.
The two-minute spot was created by Spanish agency Carmelo Y Willy (CYW) and directed by Chris Balmond from Outsider. The Mill’s VFX gave the hyena his split personality and the soundtrack is new version of Nat King Cole’s classic hit, Smile, by Jot=y Crookes.

The charity part of the campaign (every UK brand’s Christmas campaign seems to have one) is a donation by Prime Video of £100,000 to Pets As Therapy, a UK charity that works with volunteers and their therapy pets.
