You have to love a company with a ferocious sense of humour and Burger King’s needling of its competitors definitely falls into the category of ferocious humour.
There has been the very famous Whopper-Big Mac proposal for Peace Day. The prom invite that a Burger King in Massachusetts presented to the Wendy’s next door. And a fun thrust and parry that began with a very!! detailed Burger King directional sign placed to dwarf a McDonald’s one.
Now Burger King is sending Whopper fans to McDonald’s 14,000 restaurants to cause confusion (and film the resulting fun). In FCB New York’s Whopper Detour, Burger King has created an app that allows people to order a 1 cent Whopper if they are at a McDonald’s (or within 200 metres of one). The app uses geolocation technology to “unlock” the deal. Customers do have to go to a Burger King to pick it up. Let’s hope the Whopper fans really are fans, even when they’ve been made to look like idiots and have a Big Mac in easy reach – albeit for a few dollars more.
