Oops. A training exercise went horribly wrong for Google when it accidentally filled publishers’ ad sites in the US and Australia with yellow. Just yellow.
The 300×250 ads were up for about 45 minutes and the booking appeared to be made by iconic.com.au, using a Google DV360 buying seat and spending across Google AdX and Rubicon Project. Google has said that it will honour the payments.
The Google trainee who went a tad too far placed orders at up to 10 times the normal market price. The orders were for more than US$25 per CPM – up to US$270CPM – far higher than the US$2-$4 market price of the ad space.
For some publishers, it’s a US$100,000 Chrissy present. Ad management firm Mediavine received an 840% increase in hourly ad spend as well as what is likely to be a massive revenue hike.
