The Association of Independent Commercial Producers wanted to be helpful. Entries into the 2019 AICP Show and AICP Next Awards were on their final before deadline. So agency, JOAN, helped the organisation to launch a chatbot, to help entrants prepare their work for the show.
The official description of the bot, from AICP president and chief executive officer Matt Miller, is, “We have covertly syphoned thinking patterns from the brains of the hundreds of the most storied creative directors in the history of advertising and marketing, leaving us with a treasure trove of data that we can now put to use. Unlike some of today’s more dubious data gathering efforts, it’s being used only for good–to save the creative world at this stressful time of awards show entries in the same way that day-to-day creative directors save the real world from afflictions like dandruff. This really is an important public service.”
But the awards entry service comes with a catch. The chatbot is a creative director. And it’s a prick.
To create the CD Bot, AICP and JOAN worked with The Bot Platform. They also used their experience of the not so wonderful creative leaders they’ve worked with. The chatbot can’t be bothered to remember your name. “You work for an agency? I’ve worked at all the best ones. How come I don’t know you,” it asks?
Ask it how to submit a print and it will reply, “’I’m sorry. I don’t know what that is. CD Bot is from the future. Perhaps you want to talk to CD Fax Machine?”
The rewards of winning in the AICP clearly overshadow the difficulties of dealing with an arrogant chatbot. Winning work from both shows is preserved in The Museum of Modern Art’s Department of Film’s state of the art archives for future generations to study.
