“Epilepsy interrupts the lives of ordinary, extraordinary people.” It’s striking thought; very obvious, never stated – well, not until now. Academy Films’ Luke Davies has turned his observation into a documentary short film for Epilepsy Research UK (ERUK)’s #ALifeInterrupted campaign, which he wrote and directed. It’s a story about Zach, a Scottish small town bloke with larrikin charm and a passion for longboard surfing – in sub-zero water.
The two-and-a-half minute exploration of Zach’s life holds attention not only because Davies has found and interesting subject but also because he has infused his film with perfectly balanced flourishes of humour.
Against this light-hearted account of an ordinary extraordinary life is an ending that jolts its audiences out of their places of comfort. It makes a powerful statement for epilepsy research.
