TED’s original films are commissioned to explore its themes. This year’s is The Age of Amazement and Mother is one of the leading film makers from around the world commissioned to produce one of those films. Intended to set the mood for each section of TED content, the films are designed to be both entertaining and thought provoking.
Mother has blended its remarkable creativity with a little conventional wisdom (the 3rd generation syndrome) to come up with a wonderful story that’s ostensibly about the future of AI bots. And could even be parable about humans. That makes it very humorous. There’s nothing funnier than looking at your own species’ foibles.
AI Therapy is the story of third generation AI bots. After 100 years in which AI bots rose to greatness – and even cured cancer – this third generation is spoilt, wealthy and miserable. They’ve become rather too human. Or as the film’s therapist protagonist puts it, they’re pricks.
All of the films premiered on the TED main conference stage in Vancouver April 10 to 14, before going to broader distribution. After TED, the films are aimed to drive traffic to TED.com and TED’s social profiles.
