In 2015, The Glue Society became the masters of a new genre, sketch humour. Its six-part series, Watch With Mother, was black humour with a shocking amount of black and an addictively weird sense of fun.
It made the Glue Society even more famous for its creative thinking than the creative production company no one could define exactly already was.
Watch With Mother may well be why Vice’s TV channel, Viceland chose The Glue Society to create its own horror series. It usually does its own in-house productions.
The Attack of the Killer Nugs is a series of horror parody promos featuring pot as predator. Its aim is to promote Vice’s second annual Weed Week.
The ads feature a sensimilla tsunami pouring forth from unexpected places in everyday homes – like the fridge, toilet and TV set. They are being used to tease five days of marijuana-related programming, which kicks off on April 16 on Viceland across the USA, France and UK.
To create the new spots, the Viceland and Glue Society team shot in LA (for legal reasons) using 20 pounds of marijuana on camera – enough for 453 felony offences in Florida – but, according to Meghan Kirsch, SVP, marketing & creative at Viceland, not nearly enough for a stress-free shoot. “We really could have used closer to 100 pounds,” she stated.
About half the weed was rented for the shoot (and returned afterward). Some was damaged during filming, and the rest is now sitting in a warehouse in Los Angeles, “awaiting an upcoming Vice Labs piece about figuring out what to do with it,” stated The Glue Society co-founder, Jonathan Kneebone.
Production was by Will O’Rourke, who represent The Glue Society for all experiential and non-traditional directing projects.
