Halloween exuberance may have been dampened in the US by Covid, but Burger King is working hard throughout the world to keep spirits high (pardon the pun) with its signature wit. David Sao Paulo’s Burger King stunt surpasses all the others – and there have been many.
Burger King Brazil is offering a free Whopper to anyone who brooms-thru (rather than drives-thru) one of its restaurants. Yes, they have to fly through the drive-thru like a witch (or the best a human can do) on a broomstick.
On Monday, October 26, the idea won Burger King a top Trending Topic spot on Twitter Brazil with the hashtag #BroomThru. The stunt will be running on October 31. To get the burger, clients will also need to wear face masks and respect social distancing guidelines at the Broom-Thru line.
The idea will be amplified in social media, where the conversations about Halloween have already started. “Every year we work on spontaneous Halloween campaigns to offer our clients as much of an amusing experience on this date as outside of Brazil. Promoting updated and creative conversations is our differential and the results have been amazing,” stated Thais Souza Nicolau, marketing director of Burger King Brazil.

Burger King Brazil has joined its global siblings to create a history of provocative ad campaigns for Halloween in the past years. In 2019, for example, Brazilian clients were haunted by their biggest fear: an utility bill (called “boleto”) which was in fact a coupon for a half-price Whopper combo with a friend.
In another Halloween activation in 2017, every client that dressed up as a clown got a free Whopper. “Like face masks, hand sanitisers and toilet paper, brooms have proved an indispensable tool during the quarantine in Brazil. That’s why we created a Halloween activation that fits Brazilian reality and that reflects BK’s good-humoured essence. We are inviting everybody to postpone their household chores and fly over to our Broom-Thru,” noted Rafael Donato, VP executive creative director at David São Paulo.
