Ocean pollution is a monster. Sadly, not enough people are scared of it. Plastic is still pouring onto coastlines and into oceans and marine life is rapidly depleting because of it.
This emergency is now the #1 priority for most environmental non-profit organisations. One of them is Surfrider Foundation, which has been fighting to preserve our oceans and coastlines since 1984 and now has more than 200 offices worldwide.
The Foundation has found a new ally, cultural provocateur, Rankin, and an ocean pollution monster people can’t ignore. The huge Plastic Monster was created by seamstress, Charlie Watkins. It’s a half living beast made of plastic waste which, Rankin’s campaign reminds people, has been brought to life because of our neglect.
The Plastic Monster’s image, photographed by Rankin himself, is now raging across the Internet.
Surfrider Foundation X Rankin has also collaborated with the startup, Phil Ropy, the inventors of digital philanthropy cards, to launch a digital philanthropy card that puts the Plastic Monster front and centre and urges people to show their support on the web.
Rankin stated, “The fight against ocean pollution is urgent and the Plastic Monster seemed the perfect way to hit home the horror that we have created. Surfrider Foundation has been an amazing organisation to work with and create an environmentally focused campaign with Phil Ropy’s digital philanthropy cards. Now it’s up to all of us to raise as much awareness as possible to prevent any further irreversible damage to our marine life.”
The card, which was produced by Getunity Inc. and is distributed by Phil Ropy, was released on philropy.com. The card is available for purchase here for US$2.99. Sale proceeds will be redistributed to the Surfrider Foundation.
