Samsung inventions have been coming thick and fast in the last year. As well as taking on the Apple iPhone, with unexpected success, Samsung has been dreaming up and producing a diverse range of gadgets at a remarkable rate.
Its newest, by Samsung and Cheil in Spain, is a swimming cap that tells blind swimmers when they need to turn at the end of a lap.
Traditionally, when a blind Paralympic swimmer reaches the end of the pool in a competition, he or she is tapped on the back or head by a steward or coach. Samsung’s Blind Cap contains Bluetooth technology that connects to a Gear S2 smartwatch worn by the coach. When he taps on the smartwatch the Blind Cap’s sensors vibrate so the swimmer knows to turn.
The cap also collects some activity data about the swimmer’s performance. The device is currently being tested by the Spanish Paralympic Committee.
Samsung Spain is also inviting athletes to become testers of the Blind Cap on its Blind Cap app testing page.
“It’s much more than a wearable, it serves as a standard of innovation and we are convinced that it will soon be a reality in the Paralympic Games,” noted Breno Cotta, executive creative director of Cheil Spain.
“Samsung is always looking for opportunities to apply technology in innovative ways to improve people’s lives, stated Sang Jik Lee, president of Samsung Electronics Argentina.
Samsung had just launched the Samsung Safety Truck (June 2015), whose technology helps to prevent road accidents through overtaking, at the time.
The truck was the result of a partnership between Samsung Electronics Argentina, Leo Burnett Argentina, Ingemática – an Argentine tech solutions company, Helvetica SA, an Argentine trailer engineering and construction, and Volvo Trucks Argentina.
Samsung has since found many opportunities “to apply technology in innovative ways to improve people’s lives”.
The Smart Windshield, developed with Leo Burnett Italy, keeps motorcyclists’ hands and eyes on the road no matter what their mobile phones are doing:
Vodafone and Samsung hop on the cyclist safety product trend
The brainBAND with Leo Burnett Sydney brainBAND, monitors injury in contact sports.
A VR story book with BBH London puts absent parents inside bedtime stories and lets them read them (virtually) with their children.
Samsung lets you be with your child in a VR bedtime story (when you’re not)
The Samsung Galaxy surfboard with Leo Burnett Tailor Made has a smartphone inserted into it to transmit wave conditions and tweets via LED lights on its deck.
