Apparently targeted ads are good. Because “good ideas deserve to be found”. It’s pretty clear that they’re good for Facebook; they make up 98% of its multi-billion dollar revenue stream.
The 60-second commercial, which shows how small businesses rely on Facebook for their livelihoods and extols the virtues of ad targeting, is narrated by Grace Jones is airing across digital platforms, radio, and television in the US. According to Facebook, the commercial aims to highlight “how personalised ads are an important way people discover small businesses on Facebook and Instagram,” and “how these ads help small businesses grow from an idea into a livelihood.” According to the spot even if you’re not a huge fan of parsonalised ads, you probably love the products and the businesses behind them.
It has launched just ahead of Apple’s planned rollout of anti-tracking tools that are meant to give iOS users more transparency and control over the data that their apps are allowed to collect. Facebook and Apple have been warring over the change for months.
Facebook’s webpage for the campaign spells out the argument for targeted ads with the same oblique idea, that they help you find great ideas and, “Over 10 million advertisers use Facebook’s personalised ad tools—the majority of these are small and medium-sized businesses. Personalised ads help even the smallest businesses connect with new customers across the country—something once available only to big brands with huge budgets…”
