Summer has arrived in Sweden. And when you’ve just lived through months of wintry darkness, sunshine is something to be indulged.
If you can grab it. The Swedish summer isn’t sun-drenched as much as it’s sun-dappled.
So IKEA has identified the country’s sunniest square metre to enjoy that sun in, and established two huge granite chairs (454kgs each) for basking, an idea by agency, NoA Åkestam Holst, to reinforce IKEA as the place for outdoor furniture. The chairs are inspired by IKEA’s SKARPÖ garden chair, designed by Magnus Elebäck.
Sweden’s sunniest square metre, and the IKEA chairs, are located on Gotland, an island off Sweden’s east coast. This was determined using 20 years of solar data analysed by SARAH-3, a high-resolution satellite-based climate database containing information about solar radiation, with the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI). Note: Between January 2005 and December 2025, the Gotland location averaged 2,137 sunshine hours per year – equivalent to nearly six hours of sunshine per day throughout the year.
IKEA intends the chairs to be both a tourist destination and a tribute to Sweden’s love of sunshine.
