One BAFTA nomination is great for a director. 14 BAFTA nominations is exceptional. All Quiet on the Western Front, directed by Sweetshop’s Edward Berger, is nominated for 14 awards at this year’s British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTAS) held in the UK this weekend. (It has also been nominated for 9 Oscars.)

The film, which tells the story of an idealistic German soldier sent to the trenches, has been shortlisted for awards including best film, best director, supporting actor and adapted screenplay. The film has also been nominated for nine awards in the upcoming Oscars including top categories best picture and best international feature, as well as best cinematography, production design, visual effects, sound, makeup and hairstyling, original score and adapted screenplay.
Berger has been part of Sweetshop‘s roster for commercial projects since 2018. His projects move seamlessly between film, TV and commercial direction, and his skilful hand and incredible array of technical and directorial skills is equally evident in both.
“Edward Berger is a true auteur. His latest work, All Quiet on the Western Front, is his masterclass,” stated Sweetshop executive chairman & founding partner, Paul Prince. “The recognition from BAFTAS proves it. Watch this space.”
Edward Pontifex, managing director of Sweetshop Australia added, “Berger created something so incredibly poignant yet beautiful at the same time. Great to see all his hard work and talent being recognised on the world stage.”
With industry buzz strong and the Guardian naming the film the front runner for the upcoming awards, Berger recently spoke with Variety on the film’s awards success. “The novel’s powerful anti-war message unites us, no matter which country we live in. We are indebted to our incredible creative team — each person was an integral part of the whole and turned the film into what it is now. Thank you so much, BAFTA. We are deeply humbled,” he commented.
The 2023 BAFTA awards take place on February 19 in London with the 2023 Academy Awards (Oscars) taking place in Los Angeles on March 13.
