Mark Molloy has filled Amazon’s Christmas commercial with more tear-inducing power than you could have though possible, all underscored by The Beatles’ soulful song, Golden Slumbers.
If the importance of Christmas is to restore the power of joy, kindness and connection at the end of each year, Joy Delivered, delivers it triumphantly.
The film begins with the familiar emotion-trigger (in the US) of a cancelled flight at Christmas. So a young woman begins an epic journey home without the luxury of a short airplane trip. The heart-tugging begins when a man at the airport exit gives her a warm beanie to wear. Emotion escalates from there. The woman (called Joy) encounters kindness from strangers on her journey, that she repays with gifts she has bought for family members. Eventually only one gift remains – her mum’s. But the emotive climax is not the gift giving but the moment she reaches her mum in person.
Joy is played by New Zealand actress, Kate Laidler. The commercial, Joy Delivered, was created in-house by Amazon, and produced by Smuggler.
