AT&T’s fun campaign by BBDO New York for its More For Your Thing platform has reached a crescendo. The campaign, which has been mixing up cinema genres so that each ad morphs from genre to another, is letting people know that they can get movies and other entertainment with the brand’s unlimited plans.
In the new commercial – the fourth is the series – Furlined director, Dougal Wilson, splices a classic western rail heist scene and a Thomas The Tank Engine-style children’s show scenario. Animation was created by House Special (ex-LAIKA/house), led by animation director, Paul Harrod, who was production designer on Wes Anderson’s Oscar-nominated film, Isle of Dogs, and Harrod’s Portland animation company, House. Wilson is the “John Lewis Christmas film director” – responsible for The Long Wait and Monty the Penguin. He also directed Apple’s Barber and Unlock spots.
This is the first ad in the series in which the characters are aware of the transformation mid-film – an idea Wilson added. He also wrote the spot’s opening tune as well as the song the engines sing as they’re climbing back on the track
