Burger King has something to say to its competitor. It’s, “Thank you, Maccy D’s, for having our back in 2019.” It’s a pun. You see, BBH placed a McDonald’s hamburger behind every Whopper it shot for every ad in 2019. Yesterday, Burger King (OK, BBH) revealed the secret – and also proved that the Whopper is more generous than a Macca’s Burger.
At the end of a year of taunting and teasing of McDonald’s, this is the final coup. And it’s a triumph. Burger King could have told people that its Whopper was bigger over and over, it would not have had the impact of this stunt – it’s the length of the stunt, the commitment to it and the surprise of being tricked over and over that people are going to remember.

Ian Heartfield, chief creative officer of BBH London, stated, “Placing our competitor’s product in our own ads throughout 2019 without anyone knowing has been one of the most fun ideas we have ever executed. It is of course just a good old-fashioned product comparison idea, but it’s been brought bang up to date by some lateral thinking and rebellious media behaviour. We’re loving it.”
