Start your own agency. Make it grow by pitching against, sabotaging and nicking other agencies’ pretentious creatives. Then set your sights on the ultimate aim – winning ad awards…
…for fun. The Award Winning Game is a Kickstarter project by Excaliburp creatives, Callison Neo and David Goh, for a tabletop game that lets you do whatever it takes to get to the top in advertising.
The game is rather like advertising for real – if you have a cynical attitude to how adland works:
“The Award Winning Game plunges you into the hellish underbelly of the advertising industry… where clients have horns, deadlines are always an hour away and showing a little cleavage wins you accounts. From humble beginnings, you and your friends will run your own ad agencies, working (and sabotaging) your way up to hiring the world’s most pretentious creatives, and winning accounts from famous brands… only to throw them away for the shot at winning awards. Because, y’know, who needs clients when you’ve got prestige?”
Players become the founders of their own advertising agencies. They grow their agencies by winning accounts through pitching, amass wealth and hire creatives by picking up name cards. “And once a strong foothold within the industry has been gained by players, the game will shift to what truly matters: Awards! Be the first player to win three awards, and you win!”
“As fans of tabletop games who spent our fair share of time in advertising, we set out to create a game that’s not only relatable and enjoyable by our peers, but also offers outsiders an honest (but slightly exaggerated) take on the industry,” Neo and Goh commented.
If a game that’s “less about hard work, passion and more about how badly and creatively you’re able to screw over your friends,” sounds like fun then you might want to kick in a few dollars to fund it. It’s a Kickstart project that had earned AU$3,436 of its AU$36,000 goal by September 16, with 29 days left to go.
When they’re not creating self-initiated projects, Callison Neo and David Goh are designers in Singapore.
Callison: “Having spent the last four years working with advertising, branding and publishing agencies, Callison knows the ins and outs of the industry and has amassed plenty of work-related anecdotes to boot. Of particular note is his extensive knowledge of print production and its intricacies.
Goh: “As an independent designer, David is involved in multiple facets of the design industry, the most prominent of which is being a stock illustrator and inspector for iStock. He also works on pop-culture illustrations over at Hyperlixir, where prints and shirts of his work can be purchased.
