There are so many advertising festivals. Ciclope is different. It focusses on the art of execution, the craft of making commercials and music videos, rather than ideas. It applauds the craftspeople first.
Ciclope Festival continues to grow and this year, David LaChapelle, will be one of its drawcards. LaChappelle, director and one of the most influential photographers in the last decades, will be one of its headliner speakers in Berlin, on November 8 and 9.
He joins speakers, Lance Acord, director and cinematographer of films such as Lost in Translation or Being John Malkovich]; Academy-award winning editor, Kirk Baxter, who edited The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button], Richard Brim, chief creative officer of adam&eveDDB; Jenny Pham, director of brand communications at Adidas Originals); Carl Johnson, founding partner of Anomaly; costume designer, Sara Sensoy; and directors, Crystal Moselle, James Rouse and Emmanuel Adjei, among others.
LaChapelle began showing his work in New York Galleries after attending high school at North Carolina School of The Arts in the mid 1980s. Soon after, he was offered a job by Andy Warhol to work at Interview Magazine.
LaChapelle’s unique approach to image making quickly gained international interest. When his staged pictures became widely recognisable and LaChapelle began to expand the genre of photography.
By 1991, The New York Times predicted, “LaChapelle is certain to influence the work of a new generation… in the same way that Mr Avedon pioneered so much of what is familiar today.” His portrait, stage and music video and film works have become archetypes of America in the 21st century and LaChapelle, himself, has become a fixture in contemporary art.
While Ciclope’s speakers inform and entertain their audiences, a jury of about 100 gifted creatives, producers and directors from all over the world will judge the best commercials, branded content, music videos, fashion films and digital experiences in almost 40 categories.
