On May 15, skylight and window company, Velux, and YouGov published a report called The Indoor Generation. If you stay inside to work, eat, exercise and amuse ourselves, you are the indoor generation. If you close the curtains, pull down the blinds and shut windows and doors, you are the indoor generation. You’re spending a major part, up to 90%, of your life indoors.
That comes with health risks. You might be familiar with some of them – allergies, asthma, depression, learning difficulties. Yes, they’re the ones we vaguely attribute to “modern life”.
To coincide with the report, creative agency, &Co, created a three-minute film, The Indoor Generation. It has taken the internet by storm – been watched more than 39 million times and shared 600,000 times in a couple of weeks. It has also triggered a major debate on social media – been the catalyst for hundreds of thousands of posts. It has the major media outlets talking
Here are a few of the facts it points out:
- Indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor
- Living in damp and mouldy homes increases the risk of asthma by 40%
- Lack of daylight can make us sad and can lead to depression
- Daylight can boost your children’s learning abilities by up to 15%
- Children’s bedrooms can be the most polluted room in the house
