In July this year, South Korean financial services company, Hyundai Card (yes, it is an affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group), released a new kind of credit card. Alphabet Card was the world’s first standalone credit card brand, with 11 distinct cards specialised in areas such as beauty, dining out, shopping, recurring payments, and travel. Each card provides straightforward benefits, such as 10% discounts in designated categories, making it easy for consumers to choose a card that works best with their lifestyle.
The strategy has been a good one, with Alphabet Card surpassing 150,000 cards issued within just three months of its launch. Alphabet Card has gained new members for Hyundai Card as well as being taken up as a complementary card used alongside Koreans’ existing credit cards.
The card looks friendly. Deliberately so. Unconventional design is part of the company’s personality, and reassuringly human to customers. Alphabet Card’s distinct visual identity includes a custom typeface and specially designed packaging, with the Hyundai Card corporate logo removed from the front of the cards. Rather than putting its established corporate identity at the forefront, Hyundai Card chose to build an independent brand for Alphabet Card with its own identity. This reflects the company’s belief that a credit card can be more than a financial product offering rewards and benefits. Alphabet Card serves personal tastes and lifestyles, a brand experience distinct from Hyundai Card’s existing products.

The success of the card is built on Hyundai Card identifying changing demand and developing Alphabet Card around the idea of lifestyle-specific benefits. As a market where new trends in beauty, fashion and digital services emerge and spread quickly, South Korean preferences and lifestyles have become increasingly diverse and specialised. This shift is creating demand not only for general-purpose credit cards that offer a broad range of benefits, but also for cards that provide greater value in specific spending categories.

Another key factor behind Alphabet Card’s popularity is its intuitive approach to product naming and benefits. Hyundai Card established a clear brand structure in which each letter of the alphabet represents a specific spending category. For example, Alphabet Card B stands for Beauty, while Alphabet Card T represents Travel. By combining easily recognisable names with simple benefits, such as 10% discounts in designated categories, the company has made it easier for consumers to understand and select the right card without navigating complicated rewards structures.
