Innocean Indonesia and Dulux were looking for a solution to Indonesia’s fly problem. Its hot and humid climate is a breeding ground for flies. These insects can transmit more than 65 diseases, including typhoid fever, cholera, and diarrhoea and children are often more susceptible, especially because mealtime hygiene does not tend to be their forté.
Their research came up with an interesting insight. Flies hate the colour yellow. So Innocean and Dulux conducted an experiment. They set up two tables with plates of food, one painted in a vibrant yellow and the other left untouched. The flies were attracted to the non-yellow table.
The experiment led to Project Yellow Canteen. The corporate social responsibility project was launched in October to help creater a healthier dining environment for students in school canteens. They transformed several school canteens by painting tables, benches, and walls in yellow. The new paint not only repelled flies, it also brightened school canteens to help improve students’ well-being.
