“Who else could be both hysterically funny and hugely terrifying at the same time?” Josh Yguado, president and co-founder of L.A. mobile games studio, Jam City, encapsulates the appeal of Family Guy’s new mobile app.
The free app, Family Guy: Another Freakin’ Mobile Game, is being used to promote the 300th episode of the Family Guy television series on Fox in the US. If you’re a Family Guy fan, you know that Trejo features regularly on the show. Being a game, the #1 past-time for young blokes, the app also connects the show to its young male audience.
The game was created by Jam City in partnership FoxNext Games and the Family Guy Production team. The puzzle-based game gives anyone with a mobile device access into the town of Quahog to follow Peter around in his booze truck and interact with their favourite characters from the Family Guy universe. For a limited time, the game includes an epic match-3 battle between Peter Griffin’s food truck and Trejo’s Coffee & Donuts’ truck. (“Word is Peter’s truck business is booming and Danny wants in on that sweet, sweet action,” Jam City noted in its press release.)
The campaign includes two main videos. The two-minute, Family Guy: Another Freakin’ Mobile Game: Danny Trejo Event, is a zany TV game show-style video that introduces the mechanics of the game app.
Meanwhile, Trejo’s Coffee & Donuts (his real life store) is offering the first 300 people who shop there with the game on their phone a limited-edition collectible.
The second video, Undercover Owner, taunts young males to download and play the game in Trejo fashion (with humour and a machete).
“When Jam City asked me to appear in Family Guy: Another Freakin’ Mobile Game, I had two questions,” stated Danny Trejo.
“‘Who wants some delicious doughnuts?’ and ‘What happens to players who disrespect the Trejo’s trucks?’ I’ll have words for any players who think they can breeze their way through my game levels.”
The Family Guy will also air its first extended-length, limited-commercial episode in March, called Send in Stewie, Please, and starring guest voice, Ian McKellen.
