Shot on an iPhone has just exceeded its own boundaries. Lady Gaga’s latest music video, Stupid Love, was filmed entirely using the latest Apple iPhone 11 Pro. The director, Daniel Askill, is Australian.
Askill also directed Sia’s Chandelier video, which won the ARIA Music Award for Best Video in 2014 and received a nomination at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards for Video of the Year.
Stupid Love is set in the futuristic world of Chromatica, which is also the title of Gaga’s latest studio album, and was filmed at Trona Pinnacles in California.
The video’s post production is by Heckler, which is also Australian. Heckler has been working with Askill on his debut feature film. The post production studio created all of the visual effects and colour grading, including the crystal pinnacles, to create an otherworldly look and feel to the video.
“Obviously shooting on iPhone is new territory, and as a filmmaker, it’s kind of an unexpected thing to do because there’s a pretty standardised way to make music videos, television commercials and films, on bigger, much more expensive cameras,” Daniel Askill, said in the media statement. “It creates a lot of new possibilities and freedoms for us to explore.”
The official video was watched 26,665,875 times on YouTube alone in its first week.
