Exit’s newest commercials director, Danny Cohen, has just received another accolade. His music video for Courtney Barnett’s Need a Little Time is Vimeo’s staff pick. Four days after it launched.
Cohen has become one of the Australian music industry’s most awarded directors and the new video is his sixth collaboration with the recording artist. Its rapid success adds to two years of wins for Cohen. He also won the St Kilda Film Festival Best Music Video Award 2016 and the Triple J Award Best Music Video 2016, as well as nominations for ARIA Best Music Video Award 2016, ARIA Best Music Video Award 2017, Triple J Award Best Music Video 2017 and A2IM Libera Awards Best Music Video 2017.
Cohen’s greatly applauded video for Big Enough by Kirin J Callinan, ft. Jimmy Barnes has achieved nearly 15 million views on YouTube alone.
His work stands out. Exit Films executive producer, Leah Churchill-Brown, explained, “I got hooked on Danny’s visual sensibility from the treatment and boards for his Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile clip, and wanted to sign him immediately. Danny’s use of visual humour and wit, and his playful sense of storytelling is bold in quite an epic and singular way—a rarity in an oversaturated marketplace.”
He has a compelling eye. Cohen emerged from college with a degree in photography. He has shot for Vice, Rolling Stone, Oyster and Complex and many of his music video commissions have grown from his creating LP covers for the bands he films.

Churchill-Brown continued, “Like Exit founder, Garth Davis, Danny comes from a background in design and photography. Garth signed Danny because of his unique voice, but also as he brings a very contemporary and commercial aesthetic to his work—so we’re beyond excited to see what he brings to his work with brands.”
He has a quirky humour and has gathered an abundance of pop culture influences that he injects into his work. His style is as diverse as the range of his influences is broad.
By joining Exit, Cohen is committing to commercials directing. And he will be bringing with him his collaborative approach, his left-of-centre creative vision and dedication to his craft.
