Bacardi-owned brand, Patrón, is confirming its place at the world’s #1 super-premium tequila with a commercial directed by Guillermo del Toro, director of Frankenstein and Pan’s Labyrinth. Guillermo del Toro has brought his connection to fairy tales, gothicism and horror as well as a lavish visual style, while BBH USA has added self-aware humour. The spot, The Perfect Pour, draws parallels between del Toro’s uncompromising filmmaking craftsmanship and the care it puts into its premium tequila.
It’s not the first time the director and the brand have got together. In 2017, they collaborated on a three-minute video short promoting their collaborative tequila product – filmed with Del Toro’s signature flair for dark and gothic. That time, del Toro was used as a brand endorser, rather than creating or directing the film.
The spot was shot on location at the Hacienda Patrón distillery in Jalisco, Mexico, with a Mexican-led team. Motion-capture effects helped bring the skeletons to life and their designs emphasise distinctively Mexican visual motifs.
