Optus Sport intends to be “the home of elite international football in Australia”. To kick off this sizable ambition, it is the exclusive Australian broadcaster of all 64 matches of the 2018 FIF World Cup.
72andSunny and Photoplay have been given the job of making sure that Optus’ first step towards its goal hits the mark. Their campaign is called The Good, The Bad and The Beautiful. It’s a celebration of the most dramatic moments of the World Cup – but no game play is shown. All those moments are shown from their audiences’ perspective – the cheers, the shouts, the joy, the frustration of the fans.
Ben White, managing director for product and marketing at Optus, explained, “This campaign embraces the moments that lift us, unite us, confuse us and, occasionally, send us spiralling into a rage. Quite simply, these moments can come from any game, at any time which is why Optus Sport is excited to be sharing it all.
“We wanted a campaign that captures the spirit of the game, but also the sheer entertainment value of the tournament for all fans.”
Photoplay director, Scott Otto Anderson, was a natural choice for the task. The film had to stand out, had to understand what it really means to be a football fan, had to sweep its audience up in the emotions it was showing, while it also conveyed the benefit of “being at the game”, wherever your day took you.
“Scott Otto Anderson could have represented Australia in the Olympics but instead thought it was better to use the Institute of Sport funding to study design. It’s this kind of logic that sets Otto apart,” Photoplay noted.
“He’s a unique film director whose style lends itself to art directed performance, design and visual effects, while still producing work filled with character and soul.”
