Imogen Grist is exactly what Photoplay/Playtime was created for. Masterfully creative and talented across a range of facets, she is a director, photographer and designer, who is also a singer-songwriter, under the name Babitha. She has just signed with Playtime for representation in Australia and New Zealand.
Understandably, Grist developed her craft in music videos. She has since directed campaigns for nib, Koala, Tennis Australia and Solotel. With graphic design and photography in her background, Grist’s visuals are striking and her art direction immaculate, and there is a playfulness to her approach that draws audiences. Her music videos for artists including PNAU, Cloud Control, Clypso, and The Kite String Tangle have racked up Rage plays, award wins and ARIA nominations.
Her delightfully offbeat storytelling is enhanced by her use of colour, detailed set builds, kaleidoscopic collages and off-the-wall art direction. She has a flair for eliciting strong performances and her work has a surprising versatility and individuality that stands out.
Grist commented, “I’ve been following Photoplay/Playtime for some time. The directors on their roster are craft orientated and the campaigns they produce resonate with me from a stylistic and aesthetic point of view. The possibility of adding some of the spontaneous and collaborative energy I get from working on music videos and bringing this over to commercial campaigns is something that also really excites me.”
Photoplay Films executive producer, Oliver Lawrance, added, “I first came across Imogen’s work judging the Clipped Music Video Festival last year. I was blown away by her music video for Clypso, it was a standout and just so original in terms of creativity and film craft.”
“Imogen is well versed in working across a broad range of styles and brings her unique look and feel to every project. There is an artful, tongue-and-cheek quality to her work that is beautifully crafted and art directed. I’m so pleased to welcome her to the Photoplay/Playtime family.”
