The similarities between the world’s most famous famous painters and adland’s icons are extraordinary.
For example, “Cezanne’s often repetitive exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognisable. Gerry Graf’s use of disembodies floating heads is instantly recognisable.”
“Vincent Van Gogh said yellow meant the most to him because it symbolised an emotional truth. He used yellow as a symbol for sunlight, life and god. Susan Credle said writing for the yellow M&M character was a lot of fun because he was such a goofball.”
These quotes come from the AICP’s call to entries campaign by R/GA, three films which liken Barton F. Graf founder, Gerry Graf, to Cezanne; FCB global chief creative officer, Susan Credle to Van Gogh and lastly, the work of Jeff Koons to Fallon Minnapolis chief creative officer, Jeff Kling – this comparison by Kling himself.
In fact, the one thing that these greats have in common is that their work is part of the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The MOMA houses home to all AICP winners.
The ads encourage creatives to “enter now, and find out which modern artist is as talented as you.” Having your work shown in the MOMA is an unstated reward.
The idea came from R/GA global chief creative officer Nick Law, who is the judging chair of the 2017 AICP Next Awards, and R/GA executive creative director, Jay Zasa. R/GA creative directors, Mike Donaghey and Chis Joakim, helped to develop the campaign Credle, Graf and Kling wrote the scripts for their own films.
Want to enter the AICP Awards? You have until March 3 to do so.
