Baby boomers are in for rocking reminiscence; Gens Y, Z and Millennials get ready to be wowed. Sofia Coppola has directed a wild 100th anniversary commercial for Suntory, or as it is called, The Suntory Whisky Anniversary Tribute. Unlike traditional heritage films, this one is edgy and set to the top of the pops classic, Crimson and Clover, originally by Tommy James and the Shondells in 1968 If you ever thought the brand was staid – you won’t anymore.

The connection between the Coppola family and Suntory goers back to 2003, when Suntory played a role in the Oscar-winning movie, Lost in Translation. (Watch the film closely for the one-second clip of Bill Murray in a scene from the film.)
Even further back, Francis Ford Coppola featured in a Suntory ad in 1980 (with fellow cinema legend, Akira Kurosawa.)
Keanu Reeves, who starred in Suntory’s commercials in the ‘90s, features in this one too. He will also star in a documentary series about Suntory from Sofia’s brother, Roman, that due to launch in a few weeks.
Sammy Davis Jr, who starred in a Cannes Lions Grand Prix ad in 1974, closes the commercial.
