Cryptocurrency is viewed by some as a new world of financial opportunity and by others as a mysterious entity that is out of their reach. Coin Cloud, which operates digital currency machines (think: ATMs for crypto cash), wants everyday people to see digital currency as a way to democratise investment – a way around the barriers of traditional banking.
The 2-minute commercial by Campbell Ewald, was directed by Spike Lee, who chose to also star in the film. The script is bold and determined. “Old money, as rich as it looks, is flat out broke,” Lee states. “They call it green, but it’s only white,” he adds. “Where’s the women? The Black folks? And the people of colour? Native Americans got a nickel. A nickel!? People don’t even stop to pick up a nickel off the sidewalk.”

Making sure that Lee’s message gets across are appearances by trans actor, Mj Rodriguez; drag queen, Shangela; singer-songwriter, Teyana Taylor and actor-activist, Kendrick Sampson. Underlining the film’s emotional content is the 1970s club hit, Galaxy, by War.
The spot was produced by Lee’s production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks. The full commercial the two-minute film is streaming on platforms such as YouTube. A 30-second edit is running across Comedy Central and other cable channels.
