Signing Zoe McIntosh for global representation is a coup, even for Sweetshop. She has been winning awards since she made her first film, Lost in Wonderland, about idiosyncratic barrister, Rob Moodie, which McIntosh wrote and directed.
She has a flair for hunting down unique characters for documentary and narrative film and commercial work and as her documentaries show, she has real finesses when it comes to unveiling best-kept stories. She finds the truth in any performance, whether that’s from one of New Zealand’s most notorious Mongrel mob gangsters or a small child.
She has also directed campaigns for a host of major brands, including ALDI, Cadbury, Sky TV, Spark, ASB and YWCA. She was named Cannes Lions Young Director of the Year in 2013 and judged the 2017 D&AD Awards.
McIntosh also wrote her most recent short film, The World in Your Window.
This is its synopsis: “Squeezed into a tiny caravan, eight-year-old Jesse and his grief-stricken father are in limbo, existing more than living – until an accidental friendship with a V8-driving transsexual unlocks the means for Jesse to liberate his father and himself.”
These are its awards so far:
- The Jury Prize at the 2017 Clermont Ferrand International Short Film Festival in France.
- Best international short film at Flicker Fest, Short Shorts in Japan; Melbourne International Film Festival; Vancouver
- Women in Film International Film Festival; FIFO International Oceanian Film Festival in Tahiti
and Destiny City Film Festival. - NZCS Silver Cinematography Award.
- Best Director at Show Me Shorts film festival.
- Grand Prix at Prague Independent Film Festival
…and it is a contender for the 2019 Oscars.
Edward Pontifex, managing director of Sweetshop Australia, said, “Zoe is an inspiring filmmaker. She’s playful and has a contagious energy which collides with her innate ability to connect with both actors and real people to bring the most genuine and compelling performances. We are so exciting about the possibilities for her here in Australia and the rest of the world.”
Zoe said, “I’m extremely excited about the move. Sweetshop is at the forefront of the industry, producing some of the very top creative work. I’m really looking forward to continuing my current momentum and making some great work with this new team.”
