For some reason (It’s twenty-one years old and it’s blatantly sexist) Shaggy’s It Wasn’t Me is enjoying its second fifteen minutes (read: months) of fame on Australian radio. The song about a man trying to get away with cheating on his girlfriend is also going to the Super Bowl – adapted by Goody Silverstein & Partners for Cheetos, but still featuring Shaggy – as well as celebrity couple, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher.
The Cheetos twist is that Kutcher keeps catching wife, Kunis eating his Cheetos and it is she who keeps denying it. The fun reaches a climax when Kutcher accepts defeat, ultimately believing Kunis even though her face and hands are covered with Cheetos dust, and Shaggy comments, “Well, that’s the first time that’s ever worked”.
The 60-second Super Bowl spot was directed by Bryan Buckley.
The release comes after a teaser that suggested Kutcher would be involved a spy thriller and a subsequent melodramatic monologue by Kunis about betrayal which turns out to be a practice run – Shaggy urges Kunis to “just stick to the line I gave you”.
Cheetos returned to the Super Bowl last year after an 11-year break:
