When ballet began, it and the stories it tells, were pop culture. Now ballet is arts culture, appreciated by a smaller audience.
Johannesburg Ballet Company is on a mission to return ballet to its rightful place in popular culture, telling the stories of today, and being making itself relevant to younger audiences.
It’s doing so with Bite Size Ballets, created by TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris. Each is less than two minutes long and each tells a trending story – #1 Game of Thrones, #2 the McGregor Mayweather fight, #3 violence against women and the latest, #4 Gay Pride.
The fourth ballet was created to coincide with the annual Johannesburg Pride Festival, which took place in South Africa on the October 187 weekend.
The Johannesburg Gay Pride festival – Africa’s first and its largest – inspired the Johannesburg Ballet Company to join the conversation and address the issue of LGBTQ rights.
The little ballet shines a spotlight on the anti-LGBTQ laws of many African countries, and supports the event in which many South Africans put their safety and freedom at risk to come together and show support for the LGBTQ community.
The #BiteSizeBallet films are running in social media and on YouTube.
