TBWA\Media Arts Lab’s series of ambitious Apple movies shot on iPhone continues. Each is built around the cultural heritage of one country, this one, shot in Mexico features lucha libre, the bizarre professional wrestling game whose legacy goes back 100 years and made its stars cinematic heroes in the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s.
The 13-minute film, Huracán Ramírez vs. La Piñata Enchilada, is the story of a retired lucha libre legend, Huracán Ramírez, who must return to fight against a piñata villain terrorising the locals. (Huracán Ramírez is the first luchador character created for a movie in 1952.) The monster is unwittingly created by a boy when he uses extra spicy chili powder as a replacement for sugar during the piñata-making process. Along with Ramírez, another well-known luchador, Dr Wagner, also makes an appearance.

The story is set in various locations across Mexico City, with action-packed scenes that show off the iPhone 14 Pro’s cinematic capabilities, such as Action Mode and Low Light.
It was directed by Los Pérez (directing and writing duo, Tania Verduzco and Adrián Pérez). Of cours,e it was shot entirely on an iPhone. The film will run online, TV and in theatres and Apple has created movie posters, outdoor ads that depict luchadores performing their most famous moves, and a behind-the-scenes video narrated by Leo Magadán, one of the most influential voices in Mexico’s Lucha Libre history.
