Theo Adams has a signature style. It’s bright, striking in its use of colour. It’s unusual, striking in its use of cast, props and make-up. Understandably, it attracts attention.
“Beauty is a lack of fear,” he told Dazed magazine, “to be bold, to be human and to be yourself.”
Theo Adams
At 15, he left school joined the London club circuit. That was the beginning of the Theo Adams the world knows today. He wore extravagant make-up to disguise his age. Eventually, clubbing led to performance art which, in turn, led to an invitation to put on a performance at the Tate in 2008. This was the seed for the Theo Adams Company, which he formed the same year with a group of friends including dancers from the Royal Ballet School. Over a decade, its performances have become increasingly eccentric, while specifically catering to the cause or occasion, made with a close-knit and constantly expanding group of collaborators.
Always unique.
Adams has worked with major brands such as MAC Cosmetics and Louis Vuitton.
He is now making the move into film. He directed a film for Dazed Beauty, titled Dream Like The Stars, which launched online on June 20, accompanied by an interview, which gives insights into the origins of the film.
He is currently directing the FKA Twigs tour, Magdalene, alongside her.
Theo explained, “Magdalene is 100% an FKA twigs show,” Adams explains, “but it has all the signatures of a Theo Adams Company performance – the use of reveals, the repeated transformation of the multi-layered sets, the emotion and drama, and the twisting of theatrical stereotypes.”
Adams has now joined Prettybird as a collaborator. The journey for his unique talent and remarkable performances will now be steered by the production company. He stated, “I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining the boldest, most forward-thinking and open family at Prettybird as a collaborator. The work I create is not the most easily definable but for the Prettybird team to put their trust, expertise and support into my process and help foster my ideas is invaluable to me personally and my work. I’m very excited for what’s to come. I’m home.”
Prettybird UK founder and executive producer, Juliette Larthe, added, “I am truly delighted to be collaborating with Theo Adams, thereby formally cementing my deep admiration and love for the legend Theo is. Theo Adams is one of the most exciting Auteurs of Creative Direction alive, bringing audiences to their knees in worship, Theo is widely acknowledged and respected in theatrical & immersive experiential worlds. I’m looking forward to seeing how we can further pollinate the entertainment landscape with Theo Adams’ artistry.”
The unique talent of Theo Adams has won rave reviews from publications such as American Vogue, Dazed and Confused and W Magazine. British Vogue stated, “If you’re not already familiar with the name Theo Adams, you’re officially a dying species.”
