The lucky agency that got to work with what is clearly a very brave client (Renault) is Publicis Conseil. That agency rather cleverly called on artists, Kuntzel+Deygas. And the resulting ad is exactly what young women who put fun first and fashion second (yes, when buying a car) will remember, talk about and be motivated by.
Renault launched the Twingo at the Paris Motor Show in September 1992 and began selling it throughout Europe in 1993. On series 14 episode 4 of Top Gear (2011), Jeremy Clarkson road and barrel-rolled a second generation Twingo, upside down through a sewage tunnel. The third generation Renault Twingo debuted in March 2014 at the Geneva Motor Show. And this is its ad:
60s feel animators, Kuntzel+Deygas, are Olivier Kuntzel and Florence Deygas, main title designers and illustrators who became a working duo in 1990. They have created the opening credits to Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can, the alternative title sequence to The Pink Panther (2006), and main titles to Le Petit Nicolas. They have also exhibited at Ici Paris Beaubourg, at the MOMA in 1990, and at the Grand Palais in 2006. They won a D&AD Pencil in 2004.
There is, in fact, a selling proposition other than being the next hot trend for girls who want everything. The theme is Go Anywhere, Go Everywhere and the animation shows the agility of the tiny car. In a crowded market wallpapering the world with ads showing little cars negotiating narrow urban lanes carrying “me and all my friends”, this ad has the kind of cut through the others would have needed to be noticed by brand.
Well done, Publicis Conseil
