Turn spam emails into slayable zombies? Hell yeah. Uncommon and digital studio, Resn, have launched unhinged, gory entertainment with a genuinely useful outcome – The Unread.
The Unread is a free, slasher-worthy zombie browser game found at www.the-unread.com, that lets you connect your Gmail and slaughter your inbox spam. It exists to gamify one of modern life’s most disliked admin tasks. The Unread transforms unread emails into the undead, for users to blast out of all existence.
Each zombie killed equals one unwanted email deleted for good. The tool has been designed to feel like a true gaming experience, blending horror-game mechanics, absurd visual storytelling, and live inbox interaction.
The Unread follows research that shows the average person is sitting on more than 1,000 unread emails. Only 24% of emails received are classed as ‘important’ – while 76% are classified as irrelevant or low-priority – yet each email demands the same mental load to process.
In fact, the average worker returns to more than 1200 unread emails after a two-week holiday – a stat even more horrifying than the zombies found in the game itself – with a staggering 45% of global email traffic classed as spam.
The game has two modes of play:
- Carnage Mode – full commitment. Connects to Gmail and moves unwanted emails straight to the bin. Total annihilation.
- Voyeur Mode – No email connection. A low-key way to experience inbox-clearing as gameplay only runs through the first level. Ideal for those working up the courage to delete all of the dead weight.

Nils Leonard, co-founder of Uncommon, commented,“Most tools designed to ‘fix’ our digital lives remove emotion from the experience. We wanted to do the opposite. The Unread is intentionally visceral, silly, cathartic and entertaining. It’s a utility disguised as a game – or maybe a game disguised as a utility. It prompts us to think: what if automation isn’t the only answer to digital overload? Perhaps play, humour and interaction can be just as effective at motivating behaviour.”

Rik Campbell, CEO of Resn, added,“Everyone wants to make tedious jobs more efficient. But what if you just made them fun? The Unread weaponises the instinct to procrastinate and makes clearing out your inbox something to look forward to.”
