A McDonald’s and Nike basketball shoe collab? Stranger things have happened in collab world, and McDonald’s has ties to basketball – all sport, in fact – created in real life.
The Nike Book 2 McDonald’s is a limited-edition sneaker, that joins the Nike Devin Booker range. The shoe stands out for its colour – turquoise, echoing the basketball pro’s favourite McDonald’s turquoise Arches. As the story goes, Devin Booker often went to the McDonald’s in Sedona, Arizona, that is famous for swapping the brand’s traditional golden arches for turquoise ones matching the red rock scenery. Booker was also a McDonald’s All-American alum before becoming an All-Star.

Wieden+Kennedy New York designed the collab’s visual identity and films, including packaging elements such as the clamshell sneaker box and oversized McDonald’s bag. To promote the launch, Nike, McDonald’s and Wieden+Kennedy New York turned Booker’s longtime habit of hiding signed, unreleased sneakers in public into a scavenger hunt that sent fans into the Arizona desert chasing cryptic clues, eerie Ronald McDonald statues, and a pair of limited-edition sneakers.
The scavenger hunt clue were posted on billboards in New York, Los Angeles, and Sedona, and hidden in a series of social films.
