Nike’s Scary Good stories continue, and if there was still an idea that women were soft on the football field, Wieden+Kennedy Sao Paulo’s, The Legend of Canarinha, dissolves it. Two films, one fully animated, the other animation mixed with live action, give fairy-tales a horror twist, highlighting the (scary) prowess of Brazil’s national women’s team on its way to the South American final in Ecuador.
The two films were produced by Dirty Work with animation drawing inspiration from stop-motion techniques and the aesthetics of the 1990s. The first film highlights the talent of the team’s star players, Kerolin, Angelina and Gio, along with the fear felt by their opponents and the story tale describes their attempt at winning the Cup for the ninth time.
The post-win film underlines the players’ mentality – they won’t stop until they win it all.
“This film is an invitation for everyone to feel the power and legacy of our national team, recognising the talent that inspires a new generation of girls who love football. We want to show that Brazilian athletes don’t just make history—they’re shaping the future of the sport with every dribble, goal, and victory,” stated Gustavo Viana, marketing director at Fisia, Nike’s official distributor in Brazil.
Nike’s global Scary Good campaign encourages athletes and fans to embrace a creative and fearless style of play. Its nine short films “pay homage to the horror and satire of late-night television with a cast of the game’s most dominant attackers,” Nike noted in its blog. Brazil and Manchester City forward, Kerolin, features in her own film, Dribble to Survive, in one of the film’s series.
Other films tap range from spine-chilling flicks and bizarre legal infomercials to late-night psychic readings and nostalgic adult cartoons…and a launch film wraps them up together:
