Hide & Eek! is a children’s book. It is being featured, not because we think ad and design creatives are childish, but because the idea behind it seems to be a very springy springboard for commercial design and advertising campaigns.
The idea is that the illustrations reveal themselves fully only when a light is shone behind the page.
The book is the brainchild of Rebecca and Jim Sutherland who published it last year.
The device is much older, “This was one of those projects which began after finding some Victorian illusions that cleverly used the translucency of paper to enable the eye to see two images as one…
“…When Knock Knock gave us the opportunity to develop this project with hat-trick design, we used paper technology to conceal the unseen image within one duplexed page.”
The result of that was a Yellow Pencil at D&AD 2014 in Crafts for Design – Illustration for Design.
