Portugal and Brazil both have a famous fried pastry, or pastel. Portugal’s is the Pastel de Belém, also known as Pastel de Natas, filled with egg custard. Brazil’s pastel is a street food item, Pastel de Feira, made with a variety of fillings.
Brazil also has a famous soft drink, Guaraná Antarctica. It’s the biggest soft drink brand in Brazil and one of the top 15 soft drinks in the world. It goes well with pastries. So when owner, Ambev, wanted to make it big in Portugal, Beta Collective had an idea. The creative collective came up with a challenge to invent a Brazilian-Portugese pastel that combines the yumminess of both.

The collective teamed up with Portuguese agency, Adagietto, and enlisted the help of renowned Brazilian-Portuguese chef, Kiko, to create the unique recipe. The result is a fusion of the Brazilian pastel on the outside with the Portuguese pastel on the inside.
The recipe celebrates cultural and culinary diversity. “Guaraná has this contagious energy and spirit. We created this recipe to spread the message of the celebration of the union between these two nations,” stated Bernardo Tavares, executive creative director of Beta Collective
The dish will be available for one month at the O Boteco restaurant, led by Kiko in Lisbon. The recipe video is available on his Instagram account.
