A record 43,101 (+7%) submissions have been received for Cannes Lions 2016.
Entries grew in 18 of the 24 Lions. The largest expansion was seen in Product Design Lions (+92%) and notable increases were also seen in the Festival’s three specialist streams: Lions Entertainment, Lions Innovation and Lions Health.
The Entertainment Lions (formerly Branded Content & Entertainment) grew by 32% to 1,843, while the new Entertainment Lions for Music attracted 637 entries in their debut year.
The two awards linked to Lions Innovation grew too. Launched last year, Entries into the Creative Data Lions that launched last year rose by 16% and Innovation Lions by 69%.
“We’re seeing evidence that the role of start-ups in the branded communications ecosystem is key, with new businesses and their products not only buoying entries to these two Lions, but driving deep into others as well,” noted Lions Festivals chairman, Terry Savage.
The Pharma Lions grew by 35% and the Health & Wellness Lions 42%. The total number of Lions Health soared to 2,607 entries. “By celebrating life-changing creativity, we’re challenging the norms of a highly regulated industry and accelerating change. Such strong entry numbers are a powerful sign of growing creative confidence,” stated Louise Benson, Festival Director of Lions Health
All of the craft categories grew. The inaugural Digital Craft Lions received 1,150 entries and Film Craft grew by 5%.
Outdoor Lions declined 11% last year but bounced back this year by 7%.
Creative Effectiveness and Titanium Lions dropped by 3%. Film Lions, Glass Lions and Media by less than 1%. Radio Lions by less than 2%.
The 387 judges in all of this year’s juries began assessing work on Tuesday 14 June.
The first results will be revealed on Day 1 of Cannes Lions Festival, Saturday 18 June at the Lions Health Awards Ceremony.
