IM Swedish Development Program’s Humanium Metal initiative has won the Grand Prix for Innovation.
The project was created by Akestam Holst and Great Works to end gun violence and poverty by using the metal from deconstructed illegal guns to build products and put money back into communities.
The metal can be used to build anything from toys, jewellery and tools to smartphone cases.
There are more than 500 million illegal guns in the world, the case study states, and the global cost of gun related violence is US$400 billion a year.
The negative impact of gun violence on society diminishes with each gun destroyed, the case study continues, so Humanium can truly be defined as “the most valuable metal in the world”.
Two Gold Innovation Lions were awarded:
- Google’s Tilt Brush, which lets people paint in 3D space with virtual reality
- Los Santos Pride, a free – unofficial – modification for Grand Theft Auto 5 that provides a festive Pride parade on the streets of Los Santos. It was created by Garbergs for Stockholm Pride, one of the largest LGBT pride festivals in Scandinavia.
Four Silvers and Five Bronzes were awarded.
Marcel Sydney’s Air-Ink for Tiger Beer, Clemenger BBD Melbourne’s Meet Graham and Saatchi & Saatchi Sydney’s Rescue Rashie for Westpac were shortlisted.
