Last year, Jung von Matt gave Mercedes the analogy that will stay in your brain as long as your own name.
Last month, Dentsu gave Toyota a pivotal role in the dream of how your life will pan out.
And now, Venables Bell and Partners is making a 2015 Audi A3 sedan the prize for slogging your way through how it really is.
The story is told through the lyrics of the Queen song, We Are The Champions. U.S. gold medal winning boxer Claressa Shields, celebrity chef David Chang, comedian Kristen Schaal and other successful people recite lines from the song, proclaiming the struggles they have overcome.
Plus, to make sure the ad got people talking, the agency added Ricky Gervais, whose sardonic witticisms about the foibles of others have made him “a champion”.
The campaign continues the Stay Uncompromised theme begun by the agency for the Super Bowl in February, with Doberhuahua – a slightly frivolous way of getting Audi to say, “Compromise scares us too”.
“This car is going into a segment with other vehicles at a $29,900 price point. Usually, a lot of manufacturers make a lot cost-cutting measures to deliver a product there. That simply wasn’t the case with the A3. It’s an Audi through and through,” explained Audi’s director of marketing, Loren Angelo.
The low end of the luxury car market is this decade’s sweet spot for car makers. Mercedes launched its CLA into this segment last year. Audi’s president, Scott Keogh stated that he expects the segment to grow 400% by 2020. Whatever the reason, viewers worldwide thank you, Venables, for not showing a car travelling along a winding country road, or manoeuvring deftly through CBD traffic accompanied by a Courvoisier-voiceover listing features they don’t understand or care all that much about.
