Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Argos and Debenhams have thrown themselves into Christmas together. John Lewis is holding out for another day (but it has released a teaser). Here’s a snapshot of each.
Sainsbury’s: New Commercial Arts has brought back Roald Dahl’s Big Friendly Giant for the third year. But this year, Annie has to travel to his land for Christmas. The BFG has a cold. That plot gave production company, Rogue Films and VFX company, Electric Theatre Collective, the opportunity for a two-minute adventure into visual majesty:
Tesco: BBH was given two Tesco Christmas advert attention challenges. BBH London conquered its with a cinematic three-minute tear-inducer about two old school friends who haven’t seen each other for years and a Christmas order sent to the wrong address that reunites them. The film was directed by Steve Rogers and fits into Tesco’s Need Anything from Tesco platform.
BBH Dublin decided to warm hearts for Tesco Ireland with the story of a young boy whose imagination takes him on a quest after witnessing the Tesco colleague doing lots of helpful deeds. He gathers all kinds of clues and concludes that that the man must be an elf. But it’s just part of Tesco’s helpful service. The spot is a reminder to take a minute this Christmas to look at the world through the eyes of a child and recapture some of that festive magic. It’s the brand’s first standalone festive spot in over a decade.
Argos: T&P continues to prove that Argos is not just for toys, building on the platform, There’s More to Argos, that began in 2023. This time, Connie and Trevor, the brand’s toy mascots, play the ghosts of Christmas past. And Richard Ayoade plays the naysayer (a Scrooge of sorts, perhaps?).
Debenham’s snuck in early. Its four-minute Christmas romcom launched two weeks ago, starring Emily Atack, Mathew Horne, Gabrielle, and Kym Marsh, and continues the brand’s series, The Village, that launched during the British Spring, with a second episode in Autumn. The campaign was created in-house with production company, Pulse Films, and director, Tom Day.
And John Lewis? Well, it has launched a teaser that seems to promise an ad will appear on November 3.
