When Steve and Jane Cornwell launched their brand agency in 1993, they may have hoped that it would grow strong. Hell, they may have even thought that it might.
They probably didn’t predict that it would have a huge growth spurt in the three years leading up to its 20th birthday. The boutique graphic studio of 2010 is now an STW brand communications agency with a huge haul of awards and a long string of clients.
Which is why is has been adding weight to its top tier recently. Sally Dobell was promoted to chief executive earlier this year.
Her plan is to build Cornwell into a major Asia Pacific business. So the two new recruits were chosen to extend the agency’s capabilities in creative and strategy, and add new depths of expertise to the business.
New creative director, Toby Rupert Norris, comes from Exposure in London where he was creative director on fashion, luxury, and high-end commercial brands including Burberry, Stella McCartney, Terence Conran and Soho House Group. His new job is to oversee the growth of Cornwell’s design aesthetic to cover a wider client base across the luxury, lifestyle and global brand sectors.
Norris has also worked in creative leadership roles with some of Europe’s most prominent brand and design agencies, including Spin, Landor and Wolf Ollins.
He will work beside new business and strategy director, Amber Phillips, whose first goal is to strengthen Cornwell’s strategic capability and consumer insights focus.
Phillips has joined Cornwell from The Able and Baker Confederacy, where she was managing director, and has led strategic development programs across the travel and tourism and FMCG sectors, for clients such as Virgin Blue, Jetstar, Cadbury Schweppes and Carlton United.
She worked her way up the ranks at George Patterson, Y&R, Cummins & Partners and Big Red.
Dobell commented, “Toby and Amber join an already established and experienced team. Their appointments come at a significant time for Cornwell and affirms our very strong commitment to building on our reputation as a premium brand agency, and is a key part of our growth strategy.
“As we move into this next phase of growth, it will become increasingly important to have practitioners of Toby and Amber’s calibre leading the team and taking up new challenges. I am genuinely excited to have my dream team on board and look forward to them both making a significant contribution to the agency’s future success.”
