Hungry Man is at Curious in Australia and New Zealand. That says rather a lot about Curious’ international cred. Hungry Man is the only production company with a top ten Cannes Palme D’Or ranking for more than ten years in a row.
FIRST DAYS OUT: Directed by Ricardo Mehedf for AlmapBBDO
When Hungry Man gets excited like this about one its directors, you can assume it really is a Cannes contender: “We here at Hungry Man make no apologies for touting all of the wonderful spots our directors have made over the last few years. We have humble-bragged our way into all of your feeds extolling the virtues of our many talented directors, and we do not take any of them back nor do we regret one single hyperbolic declaration of quality…However, every once in a while a lone spot stands out amongst the rest as important and today that spot is Ricardo Mehedff’s “First Days Out” for Pedigree…” “First Days Out,” about how “You save a dog. A dog saves you,” was the Almap BBDO documentary short film that kicked off BBDO’s first global campaign for Pedigree.
THE FALL AND RISE OF THE MOLE: Directed by Carlao Busato for Borghi/Lowe Brazil
The Fall and Rise of the Mole is “…beautiful yet gross, disturbingly conceived yet gorgeously made. And the references are amazing—everything from the bone throw in 2001: A Space Odyssey to, most pertinently, the growing boil on Richard E. Grant’s neck in How to Get Ahead in Advertising…” [Adweek, March 11 2015]. And while Borghi/Lowe Brazil’s call for entries ad for Creative Club São Paulo is “brilliant but batshit crazy”, the fact that it’s “gorgeously made” by Hungry Man Brazil director, Carlao Busato, has to make it zoom up the ladder of this year’s Cannes contenders.
EVERYONE’S GAY: Directed by Amnesia and Joao Caetano for Neogama BBH
If the perfect ad opens with a striking idea and builds momentum to deliver a compelling climax, this is a perfect ad. The agency is Neogama BBH and the client is Mix Brazil Festival of Culture and Diversity. But the production company that gave the ad, Everyone’s Gay, its oomph is Hungry Man Brazil and the directors who made that oomph award-worthy are Hungry Man’s Joao Caetano and Amnesia.
TREBOR MINTS CONFESSIONS: Directed by Taika Waititi for Wieden + Kennedy London
If there is a comedy style at which Curious director, Taika Waititi, has not excelled, he hasn’t tried it yet and he will excel at it when he does. Hungry Man put Waititi together with Wieden + Kennedy London early this year. A lot was riding on the ad. It was Trebor’s first TVC in more than a decade. The result is a serious Cannes contender that’s humorous with a quirky twist. The film’s near-nakedness gives Waititi total control of what the audience notices. “Confessions” needed that in order to pit two Trebor mints against each other in a way that also underscored people’s enthusiasm for the brand.
