While Moldy Whopper made people aware that Burger King was done with preservatives in 2020, the real work began quietly in 2015. There’s no more quiet. Burger King’s pledge to remove 120 preservatives from its food is very public. (Never mind that the idea there were 120 preservatives in its food should make people shudder.)
To make this clear in the US, the chain has introduced three Keep It Real Meals, each one created by a celebrity– rapper, Nelly; Brazilian singer, Anitta; and TikTok influencer, Lil Huddy. The Keep It Real meals will be available September 12 at all Burger King locations across the country.
Each of the three meals bears the celebrity’s real name – because these preservative-free meals are worthy of that.
The Cornell Haynes Jr. Meal, also known as the Nelly Meal, features a classic flame-grilled Whopper topped with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, mayo and ketchup, along with a side of small fries and a small Sprite.
The Larissa Machado Meal, also known as the Anitta Meal, consists of an Impossible Whopper with lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup and mustard, plus an order of small fries and a small Sprite.
The Chase Hudson Meal, also known as the Lil Huddy Meal, comes with a hand-breaded Spicy Ch’King with cheese, a 4-piece order of mozzarella sticks and a 16-oz (470mls) chocolate shake.
(Note: No preservatives does not mean free from all artificial ingredients. Burger King can’t remove sodium citrate and sodium benzoate from Sprite. But the pickles, for example, were replaced with fresh dill pickles so that no items were removed from the menu.)
Agency, David, has created a series of three ads in which each of the celebrities faces off with their real self. Anitta will appear at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 12, in a performance mirroring the campaign’s real-self versus celebrity persona idea.
