Engine Room Productions director and lead creative, Damien Cassar, has won the Australian Directors’ Guild award for Best Direction In An Online Comedy Project for his film, Lowering Awareness.
The comedy with a delightful twist at the end riffs on the passion of do-gooders. Most are trying raise awareness about this or that, or something else we may or may not need to know about. Cassar’s do-gooders are equally passionate. But their aim is lower awareness. And they’re not especially great at it.
Their first attempts fail. But publicity doesn’t always play by the rules. The activists find themselves in a very weird predicament – they’re actually heightening awareness of the very thing they wanted to lower.
Cassar co-wrote the screenplay with writer and comedian Mark Humphries, as well as directing it.
“What can I say? This is a huge honour. Thanks to all the cast and crew, especially my co-writer Mark. Of course I’m a little concerned that this has raised rather than lowered awareness of Lowering Awareness,” he commented.
The film was Engine Room’s first piece of original entertainment, to “raise awareness” of what the company could do for brands.
