Droga5 has rather cleverly chosen the safe pop star option for its latest campaign. Taylor Swift is neither edgy like Iggy Azalea nor a diva like Ariana Grande. She’s irrepressibly cute. So is her ad – which is one of three in a campaign called Get a Taste, each of which explores, “What if life tasted as good as Diet Coke?”
In the Swift version, the answer is that her kitten turns into fifty or so kittens. (Trivia fans note, the star kitten actually is her kitten, called Olivia Benson. You watch Law & Order SVU re-reruns, right?)
“As a longtime Diet Coke fan, Taylor is a natural example of who we’re celebrating in the ‘Get A Taste’ campaign. It’s all about passionate fans who simply love the delicious taste of Diet Coke. The spot with Taylor is light-hearted and fun, bringing together two of her favourite things – kittens and Diet Coke. And it genuinely shows, from Taylor’s perspective, what her life would be like if it tasted as good as Diet Coke,” Andrew McMillin, vice president, Coca-Cola Brands, North America, commented.
It’s the weakest of the three TVCs…
…But there’s a lot more going on behind it. The ad’s music is a taste of an unreleased clip from one of Taylor’s new tracks off her fifth studio album, 1989. The clip can’t be heard anywhere else before the album’s release on October 27. Throughout October, Swift is also giving Diet Coke fans behind-the-scenes glimpses of the ongoing Get A Taste campaign via digital and social media exclusives. There are competitions as well as Diet Coke sponsored TV and radio performances included in the promotional program during the week of Swift’s album launch.
This is Swift’s second TVC for Diet Coke after a partnership deal was signed in 2013.
